Stargazey Pie

Popis: You would be forgiven for noticing something a little fishy with the Stargazy pie (sometimes called starrey gazey pie). It's a Cornish dish made of baked pilchards (or sardines), along with eggs and potatoes, covered with a pastry crust. Although there can be variations with different fish used, the unique feature of stargazy pie are the fish heads (and sometimes tails) poking through the crust, as if they were peeking out from the pie. That is, if they had eyes. Those are usually plucked out. The dish is thought to have originated from the village of Mousehole in Cornwall and was said to have been eaten during the festival of Tom Bawcock's Eve to celebrate a particularly heroic catch during one very stormy winter. According to legend, the entire catch was baked into a huge stargazy pie, hosting seven different types of fish and saved the entire village from starvation. Bawcock's story was popularised by Antonia Barber's children's book The Mousehole Cat, which featured the stargazy pie. In more recent affairs, Mark Hix won the BBC's Great British Menu in 2007 with a variant of the dish.
