The base of the soup come from the nest of the Salangan 'pike-like' birds, which resemble swallows. Salangans build their nests from their own saliva. It solidifies into the sticky matter in the open air. In the soup, it turns into a jelly or jelly-like mass. Salangans usually nest in rocks and caves. Increasingly, they can also be found on specialist farms where they are kept by farmers because of their lucrative nests. Demand for them is so high that it endangers the free stock of these birds.
