Descripcion foto: In 1932/33 the building served as the residence of Reich President Paul von Hindenburg. This is the place where he appointed Adolf Hitler Chancellor on 30 January 1933. Initially, Hindenburg was reluctant to support Hitler's appointment as Chancellor, fearing that he would use his newfound power to establish a dictatorship. However, under pressure from other conservative politicians and military leaders, he eventually agreed to appoint Hitler as Chancellor. Despite their initial differences, Hindenburg was initially supportive of Hitler's policies, particularly his efforts to rebuild the German military and economy after the devastation of World War I, but with time Hindenburg became increasingly concerned about Hitler's behavior and began to distance himself from the Nazi leader. Despite their disagreements, Hitler remained determined to consolidate his power and eliminate any potential opposition. In 1934, Hindenburg died, and Hitler used the opportunity to consolidate his position as the sole leader of Germany when he passed a law that abolished the office of president and merged its powers with those of the chancellor under the title of Führer und Reichskanzler (Leader and Chancellor of the Reich).
