The Sanatorium Fürth, Schmidgasse 12

Descripcion foto: The Sanatorium Fürth was built in 1887 as a private institution. Over 1200 patients were treated each year. In 1895 it was expanded and ran as a sanatorium for surgery, gynecology, obstetrics and internal medicine. It became Vienna's most important private maternity clinic for the Jewish middle class. On April 2, 1938, after the annexation of Austria, the owner Lothar Fürth was forced to clean the sidewalk in front of his sanatorium as part of a rubbing party. He could not endure this humiliation and committed suicide with his wife on the following day. On May 1, 1938, the Wehrmacht claimed the property for its purposes, and the Vienna Military Replacement Inspectorate moved into the building on August 25, 1938. After the war, the palace was given to the Republic of Austria, who rented to the United States Department of State until 2007. It was given back to the Fürth family in 2009.
