Ruthlessly persecuted. Completely misunderstood. Now critically endangered. OCEARCH travelled over 4,000 miles to explore European waters to study the Mediterranean white shark during Expedition SaveTheMed. A study of this kind had never been attempted before. The team put everything on the line, to unlock the secrets of this elusive animal. Just one shark could help us protect the region...Watch to see how this collaborative journey wrapped up, and led to unexpected insights, and new relationships across the countries of Spain, France, and Ireland. https://youtu.be/u-duP3sEDxk

Expedition Chapter 4 Update: Ireland
"It would be amazing to find the first record of a white shark here, but I was more excited about the opportunity of having this big, capable group of American scientists come to Ireland with this huge research platform that we could then use to bring together a team of local Irish shark scientists to have discussions and form collaborations about sharks and rays in Ireland in general. It's been really productive trip despite not having had a bite." - Dr. Nicholas Payne, Trinity College Dublin

Expedition Save the Med: Chapter 3 - Brittany, France
"The purpose of OCEARCH is to bring regional scientists together so we can create a complete study to best understand shark populations in a region. Our goal is to leave a team of people that have been introduced on this boat and will continue to work together in the future." - OCEARCH Chief Scientist and Veterinarian Dr. Harley Newton

In our first 2 weeks of Expedition Save the Med we fished Spanish waters and had the opportunity to work up 4 male blue sharks.
"Blue sharks are one of the most widespread shark species in the world, but also the most caught shark species. The fishing pressure for this species is insane." - Pablo García-Salinas, Ph.D., Scientific Collaborator – Fundación Oceanográfic, Project Director - Fundación Azul Marino

We’re traveling over 4,000 miles this summer to explore European waters and study the Mediterranean white shark population! 🦈
White sharks are classified as critically endangered in the Mediterranean Sea and this region is in desperate need of conservation measures to reduce the effects of overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction that threaten its future. Our large apex predators create balance and abundance in marine ecosystems; if we can save our sharks in the Mediterranean, we can save the Mediterranean.

OCEARCH is heading back to the southeast United States for our 47th ocean research expedition to learn more about white sharks as they end their overwintering period and transition north for the summer. The goal is to study mature animals of both sexes to better understand how they utilize their overwintering area and provide insight on their reproductive readiness this time of year. Expedition Northbound II takes place from April 1-21. Explore in real time with us @OCEARCH. https://youtu.be/ox74PLNUTsI

White Shark Crystal pinged in last night at the mouth of the Mississippi River! This are is the United States’ largest drainage basin, where the river empties into the Gulf of Mexico, bringing large quantities of sediment and nutrients with it.
White Shark Keji visited this region earlier this month before turning back east. It will be interesting to see if Crystal turns back east like Keji or continues west. We’ve only seen 5 of our white sharks venture west of the Mississippi.

White Shark Keji pinged in yesterday on the edge of the Mississippi River Delta, a region where the river empties into the Gulf of Mexico. This is the United States’ largest drainage basin and contains large quantities of sediment and nutrients, creating a physical divider between the western and eastern parts of the northern Gulf. We’ve seen only 5 of our white sharks venture west of this boundary.
Keji has now turned back east, but it will be exciting to see where he goes next. Track Keji’s movements alongside our team on the OCEARCH Global Shark Tracker: https://www.ocearch.org/tracker/detail/keji

Andromache just pinged off the coast of Maine! After spending about 2 months in the Bay of Fundy, she first arrived there around June 21, 2023, Andromache appears to be heading southward. It will be interesting to see if she makes a stopover around Cape Cod. Andromache was tagged off Cape Cod in 2020 and has spent every September there in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Will she repeat the pattern again?
She was named by our partner @ulyssenardinofficial after the Greek character, Andromache, who symbolizes strength, maternity, and courage. We are excited to see where Andromache’s journey leads her next.

This is the first time in our Western North Atlantic White Shark Study that a shark has sent us a ping in the Bay of Campeche, Mexico, in the Southwest Gulf of Mexico.
