Description: Waterman’s Memorial Mariner’s Point 2246 Curtis Merritt Harbor Dr. Chincoteague, Virginia Access: 24/7. Two photos required. NOTE: If you have difficulty walking on uneven terrain, take a picture of the sign for the memorial along with your motorcycle and flag. This memorial honors all local watermen and servicemen who have been lost at sea, consisting of a large cross and two stone memorials, one with a plaque listing local residents lost at sea and the other with a plaque with the poem “Crossing the Bar” written by Alfred Lord Tennyson. There is also an interpretive marker describing two shipwrecks and a missing aircraft thought to have gone down at sea. There are also several benches where you can sit and watch boats entering and leaving the harbor. Made in America: As a typical shore town, there are several restaurants and gift shops. On the road out of Chincoteague Island is NASA’s Wallops Visitor Center which tells the story of the nearby Wallops Flight Facility, one of NASA’s most active launch sites. Check to see if there are any launches planned at https://go.nasa.gov/3cqgYVh A short ride away is Assateague Island, home to a herd of wild horses. Instructions: Take a photo similar to the one attached, with rider flag and motorcycle. A second photo may be required for location and/or safety reasons. Refer to Rules 6-8 (https://bit.ly/3m7BRWv) for photo verification. Scorers have final say whether standards are met.
