Description: Bear Paw Battlefield Nez Perce National Historic Trail 16 miles south of Chinook on Rte 240 Chinook, Montana Access: 24/7. Gravel present, take it slow. The Bear Paw Battlefield National Historic Park marks the site of the last armed engagement of the Nez Perce war. The Nez Perce had been confined on reservation land in Southern Idaho and wanted to maintain their traditional life, until 1877 when conflict erupted. Armed skirmishes ensued and from the spring until the fall of the year the Nez Perce travelled almost 1200 miles from Idaho to North Central Montana only 40 miles from the Canadian border. Near this site in 1877, Chief Joseph surrendered to General Howard in hopes of rescuing his people. To them, he said, "Hear me my chiefs, I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever.” Instructions: Take a photo similar to the one attached along with rider flag and motorcycle. A second photo may be required for location and/or safety reasons. Refer to Rules 6-8 (https://bit.ly/2IBZs3H) for photo verification. Scorers have final say whether standards are met.
