Family members of trapped miners gathered there waiting for word from mining officials. In the years that followed, a memorial was fashioned for 12 miners who lost their lives in the Sago Mine Disaster, featuring the shape of a miner's helmet in granite, naming all the victims. It was a coal mine explosion and collapse on January 2, 2006, that trapped 13 miners for nearly two days; only one survived. The disaster received extensive news coverage worldwide.
